Event Report: “Inadvertent alert” at California nuke

During a training scenario in the plant’s simulator yesterday morning, technicians at the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant in California inadvertently issued an Alert notification for the Unit 1 reactor. The warning was specific: it reported “a loss of the Unit 1 fuel cladding barrier.” Upon receipt of the first worried phone calls, Diablo Canyon began informing recepients of the alert that everything was okay at the nuclear plant. Plant personnel now believe that “the notification system was still set up from the emergency plan drill which was conducted last week.”
