Breaking news: NRC approves license for new units at Vogtle; First approval in three decades

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission just approved the combined construction and operating license for two new reactors, to be built at the Vogtle nuclear power plant in Georgia. The vote was 4-1.

Last year, Southern Co., owner of Vogtle, received a conditional $8 billion loan guarantee from the Department of Energy. There is some indication that congressional Democrats may attempt to persuade the Obama administration to withdraw the loan guarantee, arguing that it is 15 times the size of the guarantee to Solyndra, whose bankruptcy has drawn intense Republican criticism to the loan.
