Event Report provides more details about Iowa nuke plant fire

The NRC website includes an Event Report about yesterday’s truck explosion and fire at the Duane Arnold Energy yesterday afternoon.

The major update is that the incident has been upgraded to an Unusual Event. Operators initially issued an Alert, but changed the level to an Unusual Event due to “conditions that exist which, in the judgment of the emergency director, indicate events are in progress or have occurred which indicate a potential for degradation for the level of safety of the plant.”

The fire, which was reported at 2:14 pm yesterday, was declared out at 1:35 this morning, and the Unusual Event terminated.

Cause of the explosion and fire have not been determined.
